December 10 – Sütlaç

One of my favorite desserts when I lived in Turkey was sütlaç (pronounced suit-latch, approximately), or rice pudding. It seemed to always be on the buffet in hotels. It turned out really well though I nearly set off the smoke alarm while I was broiling them. Here’s the recipe.

New recipe – Strawberry sorbet

My parents gave me an ice cream maker for my birthday, back in December. I’d been trying to find one that I like for a long time. Now I have one that is lime green! I tried it out for the first time this weekend. I made strawberry sorbet. I’d never made a sorbet before but it was supper easy. Strawberries. Sugar. Water. Lemon juice. That’s it.

Watch it spin. Round and round.

And done! It was pretty soupy so I put it in the freezer over  night. It was chunkier than I would like, next time I will blend it more before freezing it.

New recipe of the Week – Gooey pumpkin butterscotch brownies

I’ve done a lot this fall and have not found the time to blog. ‘Til now!

I saw this recipe for Gooey pumpkin butterscotch brownies on Picky Palate. Since I am a brownie monster, I had to try it.  I took them to work and everyone seemed to love them, except me. They were alright but I think I prefer more traditional brownies. They are definitely a good recipe to make with kids, my daughter had a good time helping me.

The keyword here is GOOEY

New recipe of the week – Key lime pie

Key lime pieI’ve always wanted to make a key lime pie so I finally did for 4th of July! I perused several recipes from my friend Internet and settled on this Emeril Lagasse recipe. It was the simplest and it uses a sour cream topping which seemed interesting. Unfortunately I could not get any sour cream, the gas station (aka mini Wal-Mart) close to my parents’ house was sold out of sour cream so I just made whipped cream for a topping. I guess that means I’ll have to make it again sometime soon with the sour cream topping. It was very tasty and easy. It is super sweet, as key lime pie generally is, so it is not something I can eat very often but every now and then? It is awesome.

New Recipe of the Week – Crunchy Peanut Slaw

I make fish tacos a lot at home and I always put shredded cabbage on them, it is really yummy! The only problem is it doesn’t use up very much cabbage so I’m left with a head of cabbage to whittle away at so I decided to find a recipe that is very cabbage-y so I could use up that giant head of cabbage in my fridge before it went bad. My friend Emily and her son G invited us over for dinner and I made Crunchy Peanut Slaw. It was awesome, it would be even awesomer with a little lime juice added. I’m a fan of lime juice. ;) The kiddos didn’t eat it but Emily and I sure did!

P.S. I still have part of a head of cabbage in my fridge. Boo. Any favorite cabbage recipes?

New Recipe of a Few Weeks Ago – Gingerbread and Lemon Curd Trifle with Blackberry Sauce

Yes, I’m a procrastinator. I made this yummy trifle on Christmas day. It was delicious but a lot of dessert. I would make it again, but only for a large gathering. We were a small group this Christmas and when didn’t manage to finish the whole thing, even after a week. I love the intense red color of the blackberry sauce. Also the lemon curd filling would work great as a replacement for whipped cream on, well, lots of things, lots and lots of yummy things, like maybe berries or pie or jello, I like jello. The recipe is from Bobby Flay’s show Boy Meets Grill.

Non sequitur: Doesn’t it seem like trifle should be spelled with two Fs instead of one? Like dessert has two Ss cause you need more dessert not less? More triffle for desert not less.

New recipe of the week – Tomatoes Provencal

IMG_1996From Everyday Food but I couldn’t find a link to the recipe online. I should’ve made a half recipe of it cause it was too much for one person to eat in a week. Little Girl won’t eat tomatoes which I find shocking, SHOCKING! It is a good way to use up a lot of tomatoes and it turned out better than I thought that it would, even though I had to make a few changes to the recipe. I suppose I could blend up the rest of it and turn it into tomato sauce, alas, I do not have a blender.

New recipe of the week – Beef stuffed acorn squash

beef_stuffed_acorn_squashI like squash recipes that don’t contain the word “pie” to be savory, this rule is for sweet potatoes also. No marshmallows, no maple syrup, please. I have an acorn squash from my parents’ garden and I found this recipe for Beef-Stuffed Acorn Squash from taste of home. What is even better? I already have all of the ingredients for it which is awesome cause I’m trying to avoid the grocery store till payday on Friday. I don’t know about other people but walking into a grocery store for a gallon of milk always costs me ~$30. The food just cries out to me, “Buy MEEEEEEEE!” I don’t want to deprive any delicious strawberries from fulfilling their purpose in life, so, ya know, I end up $30 poorer, but strawberry rich.

This recipe took FOREVER and I didn’t like it that much. I’ve never really liked acorn squash and I thought, “If only I found the right recipe, that would change.” Wrong, still don’t like acorn squash. From now on I’m sticking to squash I DO like: Spaghetti, zucchini, pumpkins, yellow squash. The beef filling was really yummy, I ate about half of it before the squash was even done baking. Also I used about 3x as much cheese as the recipe. So not that great, on the upside . . .

The first tomato of the season

first tomatoFrom my parents’ garden. On warm pita bread with Alouette spreadable cheese and fresh parsley. It was delicious.

New recipe of the week – Marinated summer beans

marinated_summer_beansSo I’ve been tired lately and I’m getting very tired of being tired. On the upside I have green beans from my parents’ garden, so my new recipe of the week for last week was Marinated Summer Beans out of the newest issue of Cooking Light. It is really easy but kind of bland though I didn’t have all of the ingredients that are called for; I used chili pepper flakes instead of paste. I wouldn’t let the beans marinate for too long, the ends start to turn yellow, though it still tasted decent.
