Second generation petunias

Last year I planted two ‘Misty Lilac Wave’ petunias beside my air conditioner. This year I have a bunch of volunteer petunias!

‘Misty Lilac Wave’ is an F1 hybrid, I believe, so these are F2 hybrids. This is the problem growing with F1 hybrids if you want to collect seed. The F2 generation is highly variable. Some will look like the parent plants, others won’t.

I don’t necessarily consider hybrids a problem. I have a bunch of free petunias out of the deal and I really like them. They remind me of old-fashioned petunias that reseed themselves every year though they aren’t nearly as tall.

BTW this is my Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day post. Happy weekend!

Bloom Day – March 2011

With the exception of silver maple blossoms, I could find no blooms to post for Bloom Day. I’m sure there are crocus blooming somewhere in town but we never crossed paths. (Am now imagining crocus sprouting legs and walking, quite frightening.) Also, silver maple flowers don’t look like much unless you have a really good camera. (I don’t.) So here you are, grocery store blooms. Lovely. Potted. Daffs.

Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day – February 2011

Amaryllis ‘Aphrodite’

And more on the way!

amaryllis aprhodite

I was so very proud of my $5 amaryllis purchase from Wal-Mart back in December. What do I get for my $5? A whole lota nuthin. I suspect it may be the medium that was sold with it, coir, which really holds moisture well. Too well, perhaps. Overwatering bulbs is a no no. Or maybe all plants from Wal-Mart suck?

Garden bloggers’ bloom day – November 2010

I’ve never participated in Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day before now. I’m just amazed that I still have any blooms left this November so I had to share. My leggy hybrid tea rose has a solitary bloom, up high and very difficult to get a good picture of.

Also, gaillardia ‘Oranges and Lemons’. It is a volunteer from a plant that I had last year. I hope I have more volunteers next year. It looked much better in the summer, completely covered in flowers.

Happy November!
